Interview with Australian ACON5 winner by Nick on 23 May 2005
SK-Gaming posted a interesting interview with David "davio" Kaye from function-zer0, winner of the Australian ACON5 Qualifier.

Here is the entire interview:

First of all please introduce yourself in a few words to our readers?

Hi! I'm David Kaye, 19 years old and I live in Queensland, Australia, the greatest place in the world!

Since the Australian scene isn't that well known could you please tell us a few words about it?

The Australian scene is decent, there is a few good teams going around. YGS and XR are the best examples. Teams in Australia generally consist of the best players in each state, rather than in the country which means instead of having one really strong team, we have a mix of goodteams from around the country. Major tournaments only really come up every time there is a qualifier for WCG, ESWC, CPL ETC. Things are looking good for 2005 however.

Why do you think that the gaming scene in your country is less developed if we compare it to the other scenes in the world?

Lack of competition. There is simply not enough sponsors and not enough good teams in the country to reach that level. On the other hand we believe we have improved since our last international appearance, but acon5 will be the time to prove that.

You were quite successful at this year's ACON5 Qualifier. How did you prepare exactly?

We bootcamped @ my house for a week or so, practicing mainly online vs some of the best teams in the country. Of course we played a lot of aimmap's and stuff like that, kurandus played alot of WOW, me and skz played alot of MVP Baseball, the 2 games essential to success in cs.

How was the whole event organised and how did your team evolve along with it?

The event itself was not organised aswell as we would've liked. It was held at a local LAN event in Sydney with only enough PC's for one match at a time. It caused for a fairly long day and with PC's problems involved it made it even longer. Also the other teams in attendence were Sublime, YGS, and XR. All teams who have beaten us in past events and squads that you must take seriously every time you play them. XR was our first opponent on nuke, we won that fairly convincingly, and then YGS on inferno, another good map for us which we won fairly convincingly with a strong T half. In the end we didn't have to playthe final against XR who came through the losers bracket, as they did not have their passports organised before the event. It was a shame to win that way and we would much rather have won the final, however we beat the #2 and #3 teams on the day so that is good enough for us.

How do you feel that you'll be the only team representing the so called "land down under" in China?

It's always nice to know your representing your country and everyone back home is cheering for you. It adds a whole other level of pressure when your playing, but as a team we strive for high pressure games. The Australian community is great when it comes to supporting their team, plus we will also be an underdog which gains us more support.

Do you think that a positive result in China will help Australian gaming?

It will probably help us more then the Australian scene. We are finally starting to gain sponsors and the better our results the bigger things will get for us. I guess if we went on to win the event or place in the top 3 it would draw more attention to the Australian scene but thats about as far as it would go.

What other plans do you have for the rest of 2005?

Three days after we return from China we have the Australian ESWC qualifiers which we will hopefully win and go to France for the second time. After that we have WCG which is Source, none of the team plays source at all so we are not too worried about that. After that we have a few things we are looking to attend which we cannot comment on right now.

We all know that the financial part represents a problem for 90% of the teams in the gaming scene. Where does fzer0 stand in this situation?

We have recently secured a very good sponsorship with ATi. We're fairly sure over the coming months we will be able to work with them and achieve a very good relationship, allowing us to attend the events we wish to attend. Apart from that we don't have much else.

Any final words?

Can't wait to see everyone in China, everyone else there better drink hard with us or we will be disapointed :]. Huge shoutout to the guys at ATi for all their support, makes a huge difference. Werd up to the [LF]boys. Cheers for the interview :]
